Pittsburg, Ca. Announcing the winner of the CarCovers.com 2017-2018 “How to Make Your Car Last Forever” Essay Scholarship Contest Winner. Ms. TB Justice from TN.
She so vividly captured the true essence of what truly makes a car last forever. Her essay started with quick-witted insights about our modern car culture. “Cars are an integral part of our lives.” and they are. With many people, a car isn’t just a means of transportation. It’s a right of passage from youth to young adult; it’s a part of our individuality as a driver and a common member of their family.
So often as Americans go about their day, they neglect to see the participation their car has in their daily lives. Ms. Justice captures the essence of how to make a car last forever in one statement. She must have been reading our minds. She said that the key to making a car last forever “is in our memory.”
It’s the memories that the car makes possible for us as we sojourn through life’s twists and turns. Sure you remember Dad’s old truck, but what you really remember is when dad took you out into the pasture and let you take control of the wheel for the first time, or the first kiss in your parent’s car on that first date.
Ms. Justice captured the true essence and meaning of immortality, the excitement of that nostalgic moment, or the anticipation of a new car when you are getting ready to bring home your newest member of your family from the hospital nursery.
The car was always there in the moment, ready to serve unselfishly. The car was there to take whatever precious cargo to wherever it needed to go. Ms. Justice’s story is as timeless as the cars she helped us all to remember, it’s in these moments where life’s rubber meets the road; that we (you or I) make the memories that help to make our cars last forever.
Ms. Justice will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship to use towards her book or tuition fees. We at CarCovers.com are glad to help inspire people to seek higher education and to help unlock creativity in people. We know that this award will go towards making the world a better place filled with timeless memories.
As this essay contest comes to a close we will be opening a new contest for the next school year very soon.
Congratulations to our 2016-2017 “How to Make Your Car Last Forever” Essay Contest Winner
Announcing CarCovers.Com 2016-2017 Scholarship Essay Contest Winner Miranda Gyllstrom.
“I decided to follow my heart; my heart lead me to English. I have a passion for writing and a fire
for activism. An English degree gives me the academic credentials needed to obtain a career position where I can make my voice heard… M.G.”
It’s our third year of running our scholarship essay contest and we have seen far more entries than in the past. It’s been amazing to see all of the participation and activity surrounding this essay contest. We want to thank all of the participants who let their creative minds go to work on this project. We know it’s a lot of responsibility to own a car and to keep it safe and in good working order. It’s even harder to “Make Your Car Last Forever.”
Many of our contest participants gave us some great advice on ways to do just that. Some were funny, some were straight informational and some had lots of personality and a story to share about the participants life and how their car is more than just a conveyance; it is in fact an integral part of their life.
Miranda did a thorough job of describing her intimate relationship with her car and how she keeps it running and makes sure it is a reliable mode of transportation for her everyday needs. She pulled us into a small part of her life and took us through the entire process with her essay. She showed how to be responsible & make the most of being a responsible car owner.
Speaking from experience, my wife & I have a couple of older trucks. Between the 2 trucks there are 44 years of age and almost 500,000 miles. Each truck is an early 90’s truck with close too or just over 250,000 miles. In fact, one has 240,000 miles and the other just clicked over 260,000 miles. So I know Miranda was on point with her attitude of car care and ownership responsibility. Her writing style, too, is on point with the facts laid out in plain, easy to understand chunks of information, that are succinct and right to the point. For example, when she was looking to purchase her car…
“Finding the perfect car takes careful consideration, money and time. When I chose my car I did a lot of research; I looked at dealerships online, scoured appraisal websites such as Kelly Blue Book, and went to dealership campuses in town to find out the best cars in my area that fit my economic and environmental needs, personality and hobbies.”
I’m sure as she knows the future looks bright and grand. Having a little scholarship money helps a lot too. We are glad to have had this opportunity to see what future thought leaders are being raised up in our schools and how their influence and intelligence can be leveraged to help benefit them as they excel into the future.
Congratulations Miranda on being this year’s contest winner.
It’s so hard to believe that the New Year is already here and in full swing. January is soon coming to a close and with that being said it’s time to announce our new 2015-2016 $1,000 scholarship essay winner.
Vizion Bryan L. Jones is our 2nd annual winner in our “How To Make Your Car Last Forever Essay Contest.” His writing style caught the attention of CarCovers.com CEO immediately. The words relate directly to a driver or car buffs emotions and sensations of sitting behind the wheel of an amazing machine.
Having the ability to capture the emotion, while writing it out on paper, and being able to relate to the reader is a great talent. It creates enjoyable reading, a style that grips a readers attention and keeps them reading until the very end. Content publishing for a business is so crucial these days, and finding the right talent is tantamount to that corporations success. Mr. Jones has set himself as a distinguished author, with a well written essay that is easy and fun to read.
At times they make our hearts throb, other times they cause it to race; we may feel wonderful feelings of nostalgia and for others the feelings may be quite sentimental. Our experiences as human-beings with cars have been inextricably intertwined in our culture and who we grow up to be. For those who see cars as a mere form of transportation –just to get from point A to point B—the feelings of intense attachment to cars may not be as salient, but for those of us who could be considered “car enthusiasts,” we want our cars to last forever!
CarCovers.com CEO Jonathan V. says “Our scholarship was designed to help those students seeking financial assistance to have fun and be as creative as they wanted to be. Some of the essays made us laugh and all of them definitely gave us valuable insight into how the younger generation thinks about cars in general.” Mr. Jones captured our attention right from the beginning. He did a great job presenting his essay’s point of view right from the beginning.
CarCovers.com congratulates the following 2015 scholarship essay winner:
The travel season is coming to a close, the kids are back in school, moms and dads are all back working forty hours per week or more. Poor weather conditions have started to settle in around the country (unless you live in California where it’s in the eighties and nineties in the middle of October.)
It’s time to start covering the summer time toys and getting them all set for a long winter’s nap. Now that the Rig is safely parked and nestled in it’s winter nesting spot it’s time to cover your summertime fun mobile to keep her clean and looking good for the next summer season. Where do you begin? What do you need to know before you finalize the storage process for your traveling fun-mobile?
An RV Cover is an Ideal Solution To Protect Your Investment
It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and a quality RV cover is surely a great way to help protect the exterior body of your motor-home. Before you cover your RV for a long cold winter’s nap you need to follow a few directions and tips to keep your precious investment safe from other harmful elements that winter can bring.
Beginning The Winterizing Process
As the winter season approaches and you prepare to get your vehicle ready for the long season of non usage you need to keep a few things in mind. First off you need to have a space adequate to park the oversized vehicle. Even if it’s a small travel trailer or pop up tent trailer. Many newer housing tracts have HOA (home owners association) restrictions against storing these types of vehicles on or around the property.
If you are fortunate enough to have the space on your property that’s great otherwise you’ll need to rent out a space at your local RV storage facility. Once you have parked the vehicle it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get the rig ready. Continue reading →
The future is here and the future is now. With automotive technology rapidly evolving the automotive manufacturers of today are rapidly finding new and innovative ways to take advantage of the plethora of new and emerging tech options surfacing all around the industry.
Technology has started to evolve into robust applications that allow conventional thinking to test and try out new ways of doing things. Take for example smog related devices and how they evolved from a basic idea of how to improve the environment by reducing emissions beginning emitted into the atmosphere into an entire industry that governs the automotive industry.
The technological advancements have helped auto makers start thinking outside the box in terms of reinventing the way internal combustion engines operate, how their fuel is delivered, how fueling stations reduced raw hydrocarbons being emitted into the ozone layer of the atmosphere.
It’s this same type of thinking that has caused auto manufacturers to “reinvent the wheel” and to come up with better technology, improved efficiency, increased manufacturing, and to the true innovators the concept car designers to let their creativity really shine through in their designs like never before.
The A List Players of Automotive Innovation
Take for example the Elio Motor Cars, made here in the USA and at a fraction of the cost that other new vehicles are being sold for. Their biggest claim to fame is their touted “up to 84 MPG, and starting at $6,800 USD with safety features built right in.
This is one way to effectively use manufacturing, engineering and technology to make a huge impact in our world. This company has so many benefits with the way it is run, it’s philosophy, and with no shortage of creativity the only way for Elio Motors to go is onward and upward with innovation. They may not have the latest tech gadgets and wizardry incorporated directly into their cars, but they are using cutting edge technology to grow their company.
Volkswagen And The Peoples Car Project
Here’s a popular automotive manufacturer with lotys of pop culture appeal. VW has always IMO made themselves very attractive to various groups of both pop culture and subculture. Volkswagen has tried to appeal to more youthful automotive connoisseurs. Take for example their latest concept vehicle. An actual Hover Car… This car does not actually exist but the thought of a zero emission vehicle is sure strong in the hearts of many.
Here is a video of how the concept would work and travel.
As for other European Auto Manufacturers the approach with technology is more of a balance than a radical shift in design. Meet the Prologue from Audi.
Caranddriver.com Trademark Audi elements are the round greenhouse, first seen in the early 1990s, and the “blisters” on the fenders, which resemble the first-generation Quattro. The Prologue concept moves away from the angularity and boxiness of the brand’s most recent models, and some elements are downright playful, including the large chrome area behind the rear side windows, which is reminiscent of the 1970s Mercedes-Benz SLC, and the concave rear window, which reminds us of the piece on the recent, non-U.S. Citroën C6.
Let’s Take The technology Off Road to the Race Track
If you want to see the latest technology being tested there is nothing short of seeing the latest models on the racetrack and road courses to get a feel for what is happening in the R&D areas of automotive manufacturing.
As Top Gear has recently revealed Ferrari has released a new Formula One race car that looks every bit as menacing as it is beautiful.
Do You Ever Wonder What The Future Will Bring
In my opinion new car concepts are what get me all giddy and feeling like a teenager with dreams of getting his first car. These concepts may be just ideas on a digital canvas but they are what’s driving the future of automotive design and technology. Check out Odometer.com for more great pieces of brain candy. What about technology options for your vehicle today? Laser headlights, airless tires, self-parking all types of technology currently available today.
How About an Extra Terrestrial Vehicle
Imaging having the creative genius this auto manufacturer has to have to create such amazing vehicles. Enter Michael Vetter a man who builds custom cars upon donated chassis from the buyer of their new fully custom, space aged vessel.
If you think that the ETVs were amazing to look at wait until you see the new generation of solar powered vehicles. they don’t look like yore grandpa’s invention any more.
With so much technology and innovation just with design and the accessories, on board control systems, navigational systems, On Star (TM) and other vehicle operations and communications system we sometimes wonder how far technology will take us? What is next on the drawing board?
Flying cars. electromagnetic levitation engines, autonomous driving cars? drop us a comment and let us know what type of technology you’d like to see in your car in the new editions.
Do you remember when Marty McFly was running from Biff Tannen to avoid a beating in the movie Back to the Future? Marty grabbed a little girls hover scooter, ripped off the handle bars and started riding a hovering skateboard a.k.a “a Hoverboard. Racing all around the town square dodging his enemies.
Do you remember watching that movie and thinking to yourself “wow that would be amazing to have my own hoverboard?” I know I was only 14 years old when that movie came out. As a young teenage boy this movie made me want a hoverboard and it was definitely on my birthday and Christmas lists that year.
Unfortunately I never did get a Hoverboard that year mainly due to a lack of technology and innovation for the time. Fast forward 30 years and now that same dream has finally come to fruition. An actual working model of a hoverboard. The automotive manufacturer Lexus has come up with a magnetic levitation system for a hover board.
Even though this is still a prototype it is a working prototype which is moving us closer to the real technology that will eventually become mainstream (I hope). The fact that this prototype works is amazing. Using nitrogen cooled semi-conductors to create magnetic levitation technology.
Wired magazine tells us that this hoverboard is still a highly constrained and not quite original. However this hoverboard comes with a bonus. Lexus has put together a mini-doc (documentary) that sheds light on the process and provides a refreshingly clear-eyed look at the science and physics behind the project.
Here’s another great video on quantum levitation
Can you think of other uses for magnetic levitation? Japan has the Mag-Lev train.
Ah are you still a little sceptical? Sure there have been frauds like HOVr
Summertime is here, the snow has melted off of the major highways and populated areas all across the USA. Motorcycle enthusiasts young and old have removed their motorcycles from the long winter’s sleep and dusted off the cobwebs, shined up the tank and fairings. They’ve suited up and are ready to twist on the throttle for the first ride of the season.
If you’re lucky enough to live in California, Florida and other warmer climates you may have already begun racking up the miles on your motorcycle or scooter this year. As we eager to ride individuals begin ripping through twists and turns while we shift through the gears a sense of freedom like no other sets in; and we get lost in the feeling of riding uninhibited by a vehicle body, and windows. It’s the closest feeling to being able to fly.
The adrenaline rush, the feeling of your heart pounding with every RPM increase, the fluid movement of road, bike & rider in an endless dance of skill, balance, speed and show all for the thrill of the rider. All of these feelings are normal to any bike rider, the feelings are increased and intensified by the addition of a gasoline engine and it’s sheer output of horsepower and torque.
As a rider it’s easy to get caught up in the euphoria and intensity of the ride. So easy that you can get so wound up in the thrill of it all that you may forget some of these basic rules for the rider on the road. Just as we use the F.I.N.E.C.C. To prepare the motorcycle for the road. (Fuel, Ignition, Neutral, Engine On, Choke & Clutch); we have to use logic and common sense before we aimlessly head down the highway.
The rule to keep in mind is to always stay visible. This means wearing reflective clothing or adding reflective tape or strips on your riding outfit. Also wearing light colored clothing helps other drivers see you more visibly. Always ensure that your headlight, tail light and turn signals work properly. Stay clear of other drivers blind spots to help them see you clearly.
You must also dress for safety when riding your motorcycle. ALWAYS and I do mean always wear a safety helmet to protect your most valuable asset; YOU and your head. Wearing eye protection will help to keep floating objects out of your eyes and keep your vision protected. Wear bright clothing and a light colored helmet for the best protection. The bright clothes and light helmet make it easier for other drivers to see you.
Along with the proper color of clothing make sure you wear long sleeves and long pants, boots that come over the ankle for support. If you have thick clothing or leather riding gear this will save you from the injury due to it’s thickness and density. Remember the only thing between your skin and the road if you fall is what you are wearing.
Inspect your motorcycle ensure that your motorcycle has working lights, horn and that all of your fluid levels are full. Check your engine oil, brake fluid level in the master cylinder. Inspect all of your equipment, chain tension and lubrication, ensure that you have working turn signals, check the air pressure in the tires. Adjust your side view mirrors, inspect the brake and clutch cables to make sure they are not fraying or wearing out.
Once all of your safety checks have been completed then and only then is it time to prepare to hit the open road. Make sure as you pull out on to public roadways you keep yourself in check. Remember to always keep your bikes limits in check (your bike is probably built to out perform anything you can handle so know your limits too.) Stick to the posted speed limits, excessive speed kills.
Keep a minimum of a 3 second space cushion between the cars in front of you and behind you. Never tailgate another vehicle. Be sure to use your turn signals when exiting roadways or changing lanes. Be courteous to other drivers, don’t ride in their blind spots, keep a good attitude and drive defensively and and stay safe. Take the time to practice and improve your riding skills, make everyday a reason to ride and learn how to improve your riding habits.
I found this story so amusing and entertaining and I knew I had to share it all with you our loyal readers. BTW how many motorcyclists do we have in our little tribe of readers? Honestly if I had ever experienced anything like this I would have been scarred for ever. This poor guy shares an amazing tale about a guy, his motorcycle, and an angry motorcyclist hating, fuzzy little squirrel who created a pretty big ruckus. As quoted from Daniel Meyer’s Life Is A Road; “This was an evil attack squirrel of death!”
If this wasn’t a bad enough surprise what happens next is unreal. I am so thankful that I have never had a renegade rodent attack me while I was riding my motorcycle. The antics this guy had to go through though…
Picture the scene. You are a cop. You and your partner have pulled off on a quiet residential street and parked with your windows down to do some paperwork.
Suddenly a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a torn t-shirt flapping in the breeze, and wearing one leather glove, moving at probably 80mph on one wheel, and screaming bloody murder roars by and with all his strength throws a live squirrel grenade directly into your police car.
The chalks are up and the wheels are rolling. You’ve checked off your pre-trip checklists and you’re heading out to the open road. Putting in the hours and miles to reach your destination and get ready for some summertime fun. The getaway car is in tow, the kids are all nestled in for the journey looking at all of the sights as they pass by.
How many of those sights have you passed that may hold hidden treasure inside of them? History, little known facts about a place or small town, interesting people are all part of that locations appeal and charm. You never know what you’ll learn when you stop for a while and begin to sniff around and smell the roses.
So I decided to put in a few places for fun to help spark wisdom, begin to get the wheels turning for next year’s adventure, or even as a side detour if you are reading this before you make your departure.
Sure there are the great and famous places like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, The Great Smokey Mountains National Park, Walt Disney World, The Golden Gate Bridge, Disneyland, The statue of Liberty, Times Square and many other historic icons for adventurers and travel enthusiasts.
There are so many places to see in the USA that I could write an entire novel from the paces I just mentioned and you could spend an entire year on the road and still not uncover all of the history in all of these places. To make your next planning adventure a bit more exciting here is a list of some of the top destinations by city in the USA. Just look from California to New York and every where in between.
Destinations like Chicago, Orlando, Seattle just to name a few are tourist friendly and leave you with nothing short of fun and excitement. Seattle’s Space Needle
Niagara Falls is another great and famous destination
if you are looking for a little less tourist travel destinations try a unique destination like Cabazon, CA where the biggest dinosaur gift store exists. My wife and I have been there a couple of times and it’s small for sure but the memories are awesome. Where else can you actually crawl up the belly of a dinosaur?
Are these places on your list for adventure? Do you have a favorite destination locale that isn’t mentioned here? Please tell us where it is below so that we can add it to our travel log. Who knows we may meet you there on one of our outings. So leave those travel destinations below.
Summer is here, the kids are out of school and it’s time for the annual family vacations to begin. I know for my family we love to hang out at the beach and at the lake. Water creates a serene feeling no matter what has been going on in your recent days.
The sounds of the ocean waves breaking are a reminder of how wonderful life is. The ebb and flow of the water is soothing to the soul. The smell of the ocean breeze creates calmness, and a peaceful feeling.
But before we embark on the great outdoors adventure we need to make sure that our heads are on straight and we have a few basic mindsets before we begin our great adventure.
Remember bigger doesn’t always mean better not only are you navigating a larger vessel on the road, it makes you a larger target for accidents. Not to mention depending on where you are staying for the evening a larger RV could cause you problems trying to navigate around some camping areas looking for a level place to park. Newer larger Rvs have a leveling system that must be used before operating a gas grill, the refrigerator or any other appliance contained within it’s fiberglass walls. For more great tips check out our friends at WheelingIt.us
Another great rule for the open road is to ensure you have everything you need before heading out on your journey. This does take some skill and proper planning and forethought. You do have a space and weight limit you must observe. No need for making your luxurious road warrior feel stuffed to the gills with extra weight from items that you do not need.
You will save on fuel costs, laundry costs and reduce your frustration by not over loading your rig. Take the necessities and a couple of can’t live without luxury items if you must. My wife & I learned very quickly about the consequences of having an overloaded RV interior. Our beautiful rig quickly turned into chaos with cabinets flinging open dumping out all of our cloths and other items we had stored in them.
It was a nightmare until we got everything under control. Fortunately we learned how to down size and adapt rather quickly while making our lives a bit more manageable in the process. Of course you will need to pack those items you deem as important but just be mindful. If you have 2 adults packing to the brim you may wind up running out of space before you finish getting all of your items put away.
Now that you are aware of your Rvs sheer size and storage capacity let’s get you prepared for the road. I found this great resource with two amazing RV checklists. One for pre-trip items to do and 1 for setting up at the destination. If these lists don’t work for you model them and include all of the important items from them plus your own “to dos” as well.
